Montgomery, Alabama, in 1918 was the state capital and a commercial center for the cotton country of the Black Belt, with rail lines carrying bales, produce, and passengers through the city. The women's college photographed here was one of several schools that gave young women in the region a education beyond the public grades, at a time when few Alabama women went on to college. The United States had entered the First World War the year before, and many Montgomery families followed war news closely, sent sons to training camps, and worked in Red Cross and food conservation drives. That fall, influenza swept through the city and the state, closing schools and churches for weeks. A campus portrait from this year therefore captures a community just before that hardship, when the city still measured its progress by its cotton market, its capitol, and its institutions of learning.
