Auburn, Alabama, in 1918 was a small college town in Lee County, its life shaped largely by the Alabama Polytechnic Institute, the state's land-grant college for agriculture and the mechanical arts. Cotton farming dominated the surrounding countryside, and local merchants relied on farm families who came into town to sell crops and buy supplies. The nation's entry into the First World War had thinned the classrooms of young men, and by autumn the campus was preparing for a Students' Army Training Corps, a federal program that put students into military training. That fall, the influenza epidemic reached Alabama, and schools and public gatherings were shut down while families nursed the sick.
