Springhill College, a Jesuit school on the western edge of Mobile, Alabama, was in its nearly ninety-year history when this 1918 panoramic photograph was taken. The college was founded in 1830, and by the 1910s it trained young men for the priesthood and for careers in law, medicine, and business, drawing students from across the Gulf Coast. Mobile in 1918 depended on its harbor, its cotton and lumber trade, and its rail connections, and the wartime demand for ships and shipping gave the city's waterfront unusual activity. That autumn, the United States was still fighting in Europe, and colleges like Springhill were turning their campuses toward war service and training, while the influenza epidemic that year would soon close schools and public gatherings across the region.
