Montgomery in 1918 was still the state capital, but its days were shaped by the nation's war effort. An Army training camp had been set up on the edge of town in 1917, and young men from across the South drilled there while local families followed the newspapers for word from France. That fall, the influenza pandemic swept through the country and forced public gatherings to be curtailed, and the city's attention swung between the sickness and the Armistice that ended fighting in November. Merchants, wholesalers and rail workers still kept the riverfront and depots moving, though troop trains and wartime shortages gave the year a different character from the cotton-and-commerce years before it.
