Montgomery in 1916 was still the state capital, but its prosperity was tied to a farm economy under strain. The boll weevil had moved into Alabama after 1910, and planters across the surrounding counties were turning to other crops, which shifted business away from the cotton houses that had long dominated the riverfront. Rail lines, including the Louisville and Nashville, kept wholesalers and merchants busy, and the city was looking ahead to a national war that would soon reshape its markets. Statewide prohibition had taken effect in Alabama the previous year, so saloons had closed and downtown commerce had turned toward groceries, dry goods and hardware.
