Birmingham, Alabama, in 1916 was a city of iron furnaces, coal mines, and rail lines, with the Sloss-Sheffield works and other plants running along the Jones Valley. That year Alabama's statewide prohibition law took effect, closing saloons in a city whose workers had long gathered in them after shift changes. Church groups, temperance societies, and the city's business leaders argued that the ban would steady the labor force and cut drunkenness on the job, while many working men saw it as an imposition on their leisure. Residents who lived through the year would have measured the city by its smoke, its streetcar lines, and the crowds gathering downtown.
