Looking up from Elephant's Head, this view places the Crawford House in the narrow valley of Crawford Notch, a mountain pass in New Hampshire's White Mountains. The hotel, which grew out of an early inn run by the Crawford family, was one of the resorts that drew summer visitors to the region once railroads reached the notch in the 1870s. The Detroit Photographic Company, which made large glass-plate views like this one around 1900, sold such scenes to travelers and hotel guests who wanted a record of their trip. The picture shows how the hotel was set against the steep slopes that made the notch a popular destination.
