Golfer Taylor stands at the first tee of the course at the Mount Pleasant House, a resort hotel in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, ready to begin his opening round. Golf was becoming a fashionable pastime at grand hotels in the 1890s and early 1900s, and the White Mountains resorts drew wealthy summer guests who wanted sport alongside mountain views. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative between about 1900 and 1905, documented such resorts for travel promotion, so the picture shows both a sporting moment and the leisure culture the hotels were selling.
