Few rock formations in New England were as well known as the Old Man of the Mountain, a granite profile on a cliff of Profile Mountain above Franconia Notch, and this view sets an automobile directly beneath it. The car carries a Bethlehem, New Hampshire, marker, a reminder that the town lay in the White Mountains resort country that drew summer visitors by train and, increasingly, by motor car in the years before 1915. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many thousands of views of American scenery for tourists, made the glass negative during this period. The pairing shows how quickly the automobile became part of the sightseeing routine, and the profile itself collapsed in 2003.
