This wide panorama shows a valley near Poland Spring in Maine, with the White Mountains rising on the horizon. Poland Spring grew into a popular summer resort in the late 1800s, when visitors came for its mineral spring water and the cool air of the hills, and many stayed at its large hotels. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued this view around 1900, sold scenic photographs to a tourist market. Its mammoth-plate prints, mounted on linen, were made large enough to take in the full sweep of the land at once.
