Waumbek Hall, a summer hotel in Jefferson, New Hampshire, gives this view its vantage, looking across the Presidential Range that forms the spine of the White Mountains. Around 1900, the region drew large numbers of summer visitors who came by rail to stay in hotels like this one and to hike or ride up the peaks, and photographers working for the Detroit Publishing Company documented those resorts and landscapes for sale to tourists. This print is a cyanotype, a contact process that produces the distinctive blue-and-white tones of an early blueprint, rather than the company's better-known color or tinted prints. The large negative size, roughly 42 by 53 centimeters, gives the ridgelines a sharpness that smaller formats could not match.
