A golfer stands ready to drive from the first tee at Mount Pleasant House, a resort hotel in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, during a second round of play. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country around 1900 to record rail travel and resort life, made this glass-plate negative sometime between 1900 and 1905. Golf was a fashionable summer pastime at mountain hotels of the period, when city visitors came north for the cool air and views of the Presidential Range. The negative is broken through the center and has been taped, a reminder of how fragile these early plates were.
