The subject here is the Mount Washington Hotel, a large resort set in the Bretton Woods valley at the base of Mount Washington, the highest peak in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The hotel opened in 1902 and drew wealthy summer and winter guests, who arrived by rail to enjoy its mountain setting. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American scenery and resorts for travel promotion in the early twentieth century. Its date is given only as a probable 1906, so it is best read as a record of the resort in its early years.
