Silver Cascade is a waterfall in the White Mountains, and this print presents it as a stream tumbling over rock into a pool, with fishing noted among its subjects. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that issued it sometime between 1840 and 1880, sold hand-colored lithographs like this one to a broad middle-class public eager for images of American scenery. The White Mountains were becoming a favorite destination for travelers and painters in those decades, and prints such as this helped turn their wild streams and peaks into familiar emblems of the nation's landscape.
