Winding toward Franconia, a town in New Hampshire's White Mountains, this road shows how the region's appeal in the late 1800s depended on drawing visitors out of the grand hotels and into the countryside. The Detroit Publishing Company made large glass-plate negatives like this one for its travel catalogues and colorful photochrom prints, recording resorts and scenic routes across the country. Carriages and early tourists would have traveled routes like this between mountain inns and the notches that drew people north. The picture is dated only by estimate, to between 1890 and 1901.
