A scratched inscription on the face of this plate reads "Theo. Sedgwick," identifying the sitter as Theodore Sedgwick (1811–1859). The half-length portrait, with the sitter turned three-quarters to the right, was made in Mathew Brady's studio sometime between 1844 and 1859, when Brady's galleries drew many prominent visitors. Gold toning, applied after development, adds warmth to the silvery image and helps protect its surface. The plate later passed through the U.S. War College and reached the Library of Congress in 1920.
