Temple Creek Canon survives as a stereograph, a pair of nearly identical views printed on a card so that a stereoscope could fuse them into a single image with depth, which made rocky gorges like this one feel close and solid to nineteenth-century viewers. The card is numbered 177 in a series of the U.S. topographical and geological survey of the Colorado River valley, associated with John Wesley Powell and A.H. Thompson. Survey photographs of this kind were among the first systematic records of the canyon country of the American West, and they shaped how a broad public came to understand terrain that few had seen firsthand. The publisher is not named on the card, so beyond the 1875 date, its exact origin is less certain.
