This photograph shows President Franklin D. Roosevelt in conversation with General Dwight D. Eisenhower aboard an aircraft, dated December 16, 1943. The meeting came during Roosevelt's wartime travels abroad that year, when the Allied leaders were planning their next moves against Germany. Eisenhower was then commanding Allied forces in the Mediterranean, and within weeks he would be named Supreme Commander for the invasion of northwest Europe. The informal setting, with two men talking in close quarters rather than posing at a formal table, offers a glimpse of the working relationship behind the war's major decisions.
