The painting is unfinished because Franklin D. Roosevelt died at Warm Springs, Georgia, on April 12, 1945, while Elizabeth Shoumatoff was still working from sittings there. The Russian-born painter left the canvas incomplete, so it stands as a record of an interrupted commission. This color halftone, issued by the New York department store Gimbel Brothers around 1945, carried the image to a wide public in the weeks after his death, when many Americans wanted a picture of their president to keep.
