Roosevelt is shown pinning a medal on General Mark Clark at Castelvetrano, in western Sicily, in December 1943. Clark commanded the U.S. Fifth Army in the Italian campaign, which had pushed north from Sicily after the Allied landings there earlier that year. The photograph was taken during Roosevelt's wartime trip to the Mediterranean, when he met with commanders and troops on his way back from the Cairo and Tehran conferences. Ceremonies like this one gave the president a chance to honor officers in person, and they were also recorded as morale-building images for the home front.
