Lunch at a mess table in Camp Fechner, a Civilian Conservation Corps camp at Big Meadows, Virginia, sets this photograph apart. President Franklin D. Roosevelt eats with the officials who ran his early New Deal programs. Congress created the CCC in 1933 to put young men to work on forestry, park and conservation projects, and the camp was named for the corps' director, Robert Fechner. Gathered at the table are Interior Secretary Harold Ickes, Agriculture Secretary Henry Wallace, Assistant Secretary Rexford Tugwell, General Paul B. Malone and Louis Howe. The August 1933 visit shows the program's leaders sharing a meal with the men it was meant to employ.
