Franklin D. Roosevelt is shown here in a half-length view turned to his right, a pose that photographers of the period often used to bring out the line of the face and the set of the shoulders. The print comes from the studio of Louis Fabian Bachrach, whose Boston and New York firm produced a large share of the formal portraits of public figures in the 1930s and 1940s. In 1940 Roosevelt was seeking an unprecedented third term while the United States watched the war spreading in Europe, and images like this one circulated widely in newspapers and campaign material.
