Caught mid-speech and turned toward the right, Roosevelt appears in this half-length portrait dated October 30, 1940, less than a week before the presidential election. That day he was speaking in Boston during his campaign for an unprecedented third term, where he told voters that American boys would not be sent into foreign wars. The German caption on the reverse and the Berlin copyright line suggest the image was circulated through a German picture agency, a sign of how closely European audiences followed the American race.
