Few family portraits from the war years place relatives beneath the massive guns of a warship, and this one does. The title names Eleanor Roosevelt, James Roosevelt and his wife Betsy Cushing Roosevelt, and Sara Delano Roosevelt, the president's mother, posed together on a battleship between 1940 and 1945. The credit line to the Navy's recruiting bureau suggests the photograph was meant to link the Roosevelt family with the wartime fleet. It came to the Library of Congress through the collection of Harold L. Ickes, Roosevelt's secretary of the interior.
