Few pictures show Franklin D. Roosevelt and John Nance Garner this warmly together. Roosevelt, in formal dress, is caught in an embrace with the man who served as his vice president from 1933 to 1941. By November 1943 the two had been estranged since 1940, when Garner opposed Roosevelt's bid for a third term, which makes the affectionate pose worth a second look. The notation linking the print to the Trans Lux theater suggests it was tied to a movie house, a setting where photographs of public figures were often shown to audiences during the war years.
