Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt ride together in an automobile in Poughkeepsie, New York, as the president points toward something that has caught his attention. The photograph dates from 1944, the last leg of his final campaign tour through the Hudson River Valley, a region he knew well from his family estate at nearby Hyde Park. That fall he sought a fourth term, and the trip was among his last public appearances before the election. The relaxed moment, with the president turned toward his wife, offers a glimpse of the couple away from the formal settings of their public life.
