Taken in 1938 in Rochester, Minnesota, this photograph shows Franklin D. Roosevelt in the back seat of an automobile beside Harry Hopkins, a far more relaxed setting than most official pictures of the president. Hopkins, who had directed the Works Progress Administration, was one of Roosevelt's closest advisers during the New Deal. The two were together after a visit to a hospital where the president's son James was being treated, which gives the moment a personal weight beyond its political setting. The cramped car and the candid pose make it a useful glimpse of how the two men worked and spent time together away from Washington.
