Franklin D. Roosevelt died at Warm Springs, Georgia, on April 12, 1945, and this print records the military caisson that carried his casket through Washington, D.C., during the funeral procession. The photographer, George Otis Johnson, was a Maryland commercial photographer working out of Seat Pleasant, and his copyrighted image captures the solemn march that drew large crowds to the streets. Funeral processions of this kind followed long-standing ceremonial traditions in which the casket rode on a horse-drawn gun carriage, a custom that gave the nation's grief a visible and dignified form.
