Roosevelt's face is the entire subject here: a frontal bust portrait made around 1933, the year he took office as the 32nd president. The print carries a Pach Bros. copyright notice, and Pach Bros. was a New York studio whose portraits of prominent sitters circulated widely in the early 1930s. Pictures like this one were produced for newspapers, magazines and public distribution, which helped shape the image of a president who spoke directly to Americans through radio and was photographed often during the Great Depression. The straight-on pose and plain background keep attention on his expression.
