Gen. Henri Giraud, who took command of French forces in North Africa after the Allied landings there in November 1942, appears at the left of this group gathered around Franklin Roosevelt at the White House in July 1943. The visit came during a delicate stretch of Allied politics, as Giraud shared leadership of the French movement in Algiers with Charles de Gaulle and Washington worked to bring the anti-Vichy French forces together. Adm. William Leahy, Roosevelt's chief of staff, and Gen. George C. Marshall, the Army chief of staff, stand among the group, a reminder of the military planning at stake. The Associated Press photograph offers a glimpse of wartime diplomacy conducted in the president's office.
