Few things about the White House were as informal as a birthday cake set down among the paperwork, and this photograph shows Franklin D. Roosevelt in that rare moment of celebration, seated by his desk with his staff gathered around him. Roosevelt's birthday, January 30, was marked nationally during his presidency, with birthday balls held to raise money for infantile paralysis research, a cause close to him since his polio diagnosis in 1921. The record dates the print to before November 1943, placing it in the wartime years, when such gatherings offered a brief break from the pressures of the office.
