Eleanor Roosevelt, seated among fellow speakers in a church, is the figure this print puts at the center, flanked by Ruby Hurley on the left and Walter F. White on the right. The setting points to an NAACP meeting or program in the 1950s, when the organization was pressing civil rights cases through the courts and building public support across the country. White, who led the NAACP from 1931 until his death in 1955, was among its most visible figures, and Roosevelt, long active in civil rights and on the organization's side in public life, was a frequent speaker at its events. The photograph was made by G. Marshall Wilson of Philadelphia, and it survives among the NAACP records at the Library of Congress.
