The car, a convertible, carries Franklin D. Roosevelt with his son James and an unidentified man through Rochester, New York, where Roosevelt opened his 1932 presidential campaign. Roosevelt had won the Democratic nomination that summer and set out to take his case to voters by traveling across the country, and open cars let crowds see and greet candidates at close range. James, born in 1907, was in his mid-twenties and was often at his father's side during these appearances. The crowds lining the route show how much public attention such tours drew during the Depression.
