Two Democratic candidates pose before a railway car in this 1920 view: James M. Cox, the party's presidential nominee and sitting governor of Ohio, and his running mate, Franklin D. Roosevelt, then Assistant Secretary of the Navy. Campaign trains were a staple of American politics in that era, carrying candidates from town to town to speak from their rear platforms. The ticket lost decisively to Republican Warren G. Harding in November, in the first presidential election in which women could vote nationwide. The Washington firm Harris & Ewing made the photograph, and its studio portraits of officials were widely circulated.
