Two men in suits sit side by side in this full-length portrait: Franklin D. Roosevelt and Ohio Governor James M. Cox, the Democratic ticket for the 1920 election. Cox headed the party's presidential ballot that year, with Roosevelt, then Assistant Secretary of the Navy, as his running mate. The Democrats lost to Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge in November, but the pairing later gained importance as Roosevelt's first national campaign. The record's date and attribution come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
