Photographed on November 4, 1944, this shows Franklin D. Roosevelt speaking from a campaign train at Springfield, Massachusetts, three days before election day. Standing beside him are Boston Mayor Maurice J. Tobin and William Burke, the state's Democratic chairman, a reminder of how much the president's campaign depended on local party organizations. Roosevelt was seeking an unprecedented fourth term against Republican Thomas E. Dewey, and his late-season train travel through the Northeast drew large crowds.
