This photograph shows Franklin D. Roosevelt and Cordell Hull seated face to face outdoors in Hyde Park, the Roosevelt family estate in New York, in 1933. That was the first year of Roosevelt's presidency, and Hull, a former Tennessee congressman, had just taken office as Secretary of State. The informal setting, away from Washington, suggests a working conversation rather than a formal state occasion. Pictures like this help show how the new administration's top diplomat and its president worked together during the early New Deal years.
