Roosevelt waves from the back of an automobile in this view, taken as he returned to Washington on November 10, 1944, three days after voters gave him a fourth term. Riding with him is Harry Truman, the Democratic vice presidential candidate whom voters also elected that month, along with one man the caption card does not identify. The trip followed Roosevelt's visit to Hyde Park, where he had cast his ballot, and his relaxed gesture reflects the wartime mood of a president who would not live to see the war end.
