A railroad appears in this view of Rolling Stone Valley, and its presence turns a pastoral scene into a record of the lines then reaching into rural Minnesota. The print is a photochrom, a process the Detroit Photographic Company used under license from Swiss developers, which built color from several inked stones laid over a photograph. It dates to about 1898 and carries a company number, as it was one of the views assembled into an album kept in the office for reference. The soft, layered color gives the valley a painted quality that suited the travel views of the period.
