Among the Thousand Islands, where the St. Lawrence River winds past hundreds of small wooded islets, this view centers on the Jack-Straw Light, a navigation light guiding boats through the channels as the sun goes down. The picture is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland and adopted by the Detroit Publishing Company, and this example comes from an album the firm assembled as a catalog for its office. Around 1901, scenic views like this one drew tourists who rode steamers through the islands, and the company's color prints captured the calm, golden light that made the region appealing.
