Cascadilla Gorge cuts through the hillside of Ithaca, New York, where Cascadilla Creek drops in a series of falls on its way to Cayuga Lake. This print was made by the Detroit Publishing Company using the photochrom process, which turned a black-and-white photograph into a color image through a set of hand-prepared lithographic stones. The company kept prints like this in an album as a catalog for its office, so the picture served as a sales sample as well as a view. Its soft, saturated greens and blues show how the process was valued around 1901 for scenic views of American landscapes.
