The south portico of the Treasury Building, the colonnaded face that looks toward the White House and the Ellipse, is the subject here, shown as it stood in 1941. Built in the early 1840s, the Treasury was one of the oldest federal office buildings in the capital, and its long columned front was a familiar sight to government workers and visitors alike. This print is one of many photographs the Federal Works Agency made of public buildings in Washington during the early 1940s, when the agency oversaw federal construction and maintenance and documented the city's government architecture.
