The 1933 Century of Progress International Exposition, held on the lakefront in Chicago, was the fair that gave this view its setting. Chicago organized the fair to mark the city's first hundred years and to lift spirits during the Great Depression, and it ran across two summers on reclaimed land along Lake Michigan. Its streamlined, brightly colored pavilions were a deliberate break from the classical white style of the 1893 Columbian Exposition, and the fair became known for showcasing modern design, new technology and the era's optimism about the future.
