Mules and a large dredging machine dominate this view of the World's Columbian Exposition under construction, when Jackson Park on Chicago's South Side was still raw work ground. Much of the fairground rose from low, marshy lakefront land, so crews dredged channels and lagoons and hauled the spoil to raise the ground. The fair opened in 1893 to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus's voyage, and this photoprint by C.D. Arnold captures the heavy labor that came before its famous white buildings. The caption information is unverified, so the exact date should be treated with some caution.
