Workers gather around the decorative sculptural work in this view of the World's Columbian Exposition during its construction in Chicago, around 1891. The record credits the photoprint to C.D. Arnold, a Chicago photographer who documented the fairgrounds as they rose in Jackson Park. The exposition was planned to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus's arrival in the Americas and opened in 1893. Its classical buildings, many with elaborate sculpture, gave the fair its nickname, the White City. Scenes like this one show the labor behind that effect.
