Laborers pushing wheelbarrows across a stretch of water make this view of the World's Columbian Exposition unusual, since it shows the fairgrounds still being shaped rather than finished. Work on the site in Chicago's Jackson Park, where the fair would open in 1893 to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus's arrival in the Americas, involved dredging, filling, and grading the land and its lagoons. The landscape was designed under Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, and the crews who carried out that plan were essential to the project. The photoprint is by C.D. Arnold, and its date of about 1891 comes from an unverified caption card.
