The Century of Progress International Exposition opened on the Chicago lakefront in 1933 to mark the city's centennial and to celebrate the rapid advance of science and industry. This panoramic view takes in the fairgrounds as a whole, letting you see how the exhibition halls, lagoons and open plazas were arranged along Lake Michigan. The fair ran across two seasons, and its modernist architecture and glowing evening lighting drew millions of visitors during the Great Depression. A wide shot like this one is especially useful for understanding how the site was planned as a single designed landscape.
