Hoover's camp on the Rapidan River in Virginia is the setting here, a retreat in the Blue Ridge foothills that the president used for weekends and rest. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio that documented government officials and public events in the early twentieth century, made this glass negative in August 1929, a few months after Hoover took office. Glass plates of this size were the standard working medium of the period, and the streaks and blemishes visible on the surface come from age and deterioration of the original coating rather than from the subject itself.
