Hoover's retreat on the Rapidan River in Virginia is the setting here, and the record dates the view to August 17, 1929, a few months into Herbert Hoover's first year as president. Hoover used the camp, a rustic group of cabins in the Blue Ridge foothills, as a place to rest and receive visitors away from Washington, and it was a sharp contrast to the formal White House. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio whose glass negatives record daily life and public events in the capital region during the period. The negative has the streaks and blemishes typical of aging glass plates.
