The camp Herbert Hoover built on the Rapidan River in Virginia was a rustic retreat away from Washington, and this glass negative records it on August 17, 1929, only months after he took office that March. Hoover used the site to rest, fish and work through his presidency. The image came from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that documented government officials and public events in the early twentieth century. The glass shows streaks and other blemishes from natural deterioration of its original coating, which are worth noting when judging the picture's detail.
